How do you choose your sleeping position?
On the back
According to numerous studies, including that of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service published in Men’s Health magazine, sleeping on your back is the best option. Indeed, your spine remains straight and the muscles and joints are under less pressure. Attention, if your back is arched, it is advisable to put a cushion under your back to put your column straight.
Let’s talk little, but let’s talk beauty. Sleeping on your back allows your face to be in contact only with the surrounding air. Burying your head in the pillow can cause irritation. It even seems that sleeping on your back reduces the appearance of wrinkles …
Are you a snorer? This position is to be avoided if you sleep accompanied, for the benefit of your spouse’s eardrums. People with sleep apnea are also advised to choose another position, the airways are narrowed to the maximum in this position, which can be quite dangerous.
Sleeping on your back is also strongly recommended for babies between 0 and 6 months (and even beyond), because while sleeping on their stomachs, their air ways may be blocked.
On the belly
Sleeping in front of the pillow, what a surprising technique! Only one real advantage, that of comfort. A person who sleeps on his stomach finds a sense of security. It’s like settling in a cocoon for the whole night.
But the dangers are many: breathing difficulties, tensioning of the muscles and swallowing muscles, pressure on the stomach … And that’s not all. Besides the friction against the pillow which can cause discomfort and irritation, you will tend to turn your head to the side. Cervical pain is more numerous because the back and neck are not aligned. You can always lift a knee, position your pillow differently … Your epicenter will always be disturbed since your spine and your neck will always be in total disagreement.
On the side
No need to tell us, you can imagine that if you sleep on your side, your column is not entirely straight! It is then bent. This can have a positive impact for people with back pain, as it reduces the pressure exerted by the body weight.
If you tend to breathe heavily during the night, sleeping in a fetal position may not be a good idea. This curling reduces the range of your movements and therefore your ability to breathe properly. You can place a pillow between your legs to help the spine straighten.
Obviously, sleeping on your side and in a fetal position is not entirely the same thing, but both are recommended for pregnant women, on their left side.
The impact of bedding
Whatever your position, the quality of your bedding, including mattress and pillow, is important. It is advisable to sleep without a pillow or with a very thin pillow, we know that the comfort of multiple soft cushions may look attractive. However, your neck and your sleep could suffer. In fact, your body will no longer be straight and your cervical muscles will remain in tension for several nights, which will cause multiple pains which may intensify over the days.
First of all, your mattress must be suitable and of high quality! Depending on your position, the properties of the mattress may vary. Spring mattress, latex or foam, soft or firm … Your comfort depends on your choice! Some will prefer to keep a mattress firm, even very firm, while others will prefer the soft mattress, because their comfort lies there. To each their own … before buying your bedding, you should go on site to test the different products and find the mattress of your dreams that will help you have long and restful nights.
Beware, to sleep well, whatever the position chosen, do not put your mattress directly on the floor. Even if you bought an overpriced mattress, sleeping without a box spring will not be as restful. In addition, it will wear out very quickly due to the lack of ventilation. The bedding has a lifespan of 10 years, so if you sleep less and less well, this may be a reason! A word of advice if you don’t want to change your mattress now: try the mattress topper. It can increase the life of your mattress without changing its specificity and your comfort. It will remain firm, soft or flexible if that is how your mattress is! To protect it, put on a cover to avoid stains and maximum wear.
You might think it has nothing to do with the subject at hand, and yet! The texture and quality of your bedding affects your sleeping position. Indeed, your body needs to be kept to the maximum to avoid pressure on the muscles. Depending on how you sleep, comfort will be different. You can always surround yourself with pillows to keep yourself in a certain position, but you should not rely on that.
So how do we sleep?
Either way, as you wish. It is up to you to choose the position in which you feel best, it must be natural. Even if you are not advised to sleep on your stomach, if this is the only position in which you can fall asleep, do so, but go to a health professional to help you adjust your sleeping position and reduce the pain it could cause.
